Rites of Passage

The NLFFI Saturday Rights of Passage Program, recently graduated another group of participants. Many young men's lives were changed, and parents involved in the program say they were touhed as well, by the lessons their young men were learning. Graduating participants then have the opportunity to move on to the next level for further development

Young men who participate in this program, begin their "Journey to Manhood," as a member of the Tortuga Clan, or Turtle Clan. The basic philosophy of being a man of honor, or a man of "PALABRA" (word), is introduced, and participants are instructed about what kind of behavior is expected of them.

Upon completing the 6 month Tortuga phase of the program, participants then move onto the Coyote Circle. The young men are instructed by Elder's, as to the many men of all ages can become involved in "less than desirable" behaviors. Students move from this phase to the Jaguar Circle. As students move through the ranks, more is expected of them, while more lessons taught. Finally, partcipants who complete all three initial phases, are invited to join the ranks of the Hawks Circle. In this phase, students are assisted in making the transition from student, to teacher. These young men are guided by Elder's from the Eagle Circle, mentoring, teaching, and observing.

In addition to the cultural lessons of manhood and honor and respect, participants are actively engaged in various teachings such as mask making and martial arts. And when the teaching portion of the day is over, members of the Compadres Network spend the rest of the afternoon playing basketball, or any other sport the group chooses to play. Eagle Circle members also interact with the parents or caretakers of program participants, and can refer families to necessary social services.
